The first permanent settler in what today is Everglades City was William Smith Allen. After Allen retired to Key West in 1889, George W. Storter, Jr. became the principal landowner in the area. Storter opened a trading post in 1892 and gained a post office, called “Everglade”, in 1895. Soon after he began entertaining northern tourists who came to Everglade by yacht in the winter to hunt and fish. In time, his house became the Rod and Gun Club visited by US Presidents and other notables.
We stayed on their dock for one night and loved it. If you plan coming on your boat keep in mind that at low tide it gets really shallow in the dregded channel which leads to the Everglades City from the Gulf.
