Lake Vostok is located beneath the ice of Antarctica. Scientists believe that in the lake under the ice surface there are some species that have survived millions of years. However, these species would be something that the world has never seen before, as they would have developed under complete darkness. The researchers are close to obtaining a water sample, so we should wait for the results. It appears that geothermal springs are continiously heating this pocket of water, making the water liquid more than 2 miles beneath the ice surface. The very same theory applies to icy Jovian moon, Europa. The lake was drilled into by Russian scientists in 2012. The overlying ice provides a continuous paleoclimatic record of 400,000 years.
